The photo of her studio window with the hotel next door made me feel for a moment how Mimi must have felt when the building went up. Loved seeing the mural where later only vodka ads appeared. And what visions she entertained for that wall.
She lost most of the windows in the loft, eventually. The building on the other side of us added a floor. She said she felt as though she was being entombed. It was terrible.
Eliza, I am jealous of the insights you have gleaned about both your parents, through the works they left behind. And admire your labor to put together the artifacts within such a meaningful, personal context. I'm left with many questions I never thought to ask my own parents - both mundane (why did you buy that vase?) and profound (how did my brother's addiction affect your marriage?). Happy New Year!
Your mother’s proposed murals are extraordinary. If only!! Thanks for sharing and reflecting on them.
Thank you, Victoria. If only is right.
Love this! Mimi’s restless roaming kept her work cutting-edge and progressive. It’s so interesting to think of the contrast with your dad’s work.
Thanks Anita. It’s true. Though she also spent years in this century painting whatever delighted her.

Entombed sounds about right. To lose the natural light in her studio in the sky must have been horrifying.
I love that proposal image
It was a truly amazing find.

Happy New Year back at you, Amy. Thanks for sharing how my words make you think and ponder. ☺️
